Aftercare

50% of how your tattoo turns out depends on how you heal it. If you do not follow these steps your tattoo may not heal perfectly. Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have during the healing process by calling or texting the shop! We are professionals and have seen it all, your friends/the internet are not, beware of following their instruction. We are always happy to help you out with any tattoo related questions.

  • Leave the Recovery Dermal Shield we applied to your tattoo on for 3-6 days, then gently remove it in the shower or under warm running water. Go slow and be gentle, you do not want to rip it off like a bandaid. With clean hands, wash your tattoo with warm water and unscented antibacterial soap to get off all the blood, ink, and plasma. Allow your tattoo to air dry for 20-30 minutes or pat it dry with a paper towel. DO NOT use a washcloth or sponge. After it dries, apply a small, PEA SIZED amount of vitamin E oil or coconut oil. Keep washing and moisturizing your tattoo 1-2 times a day for the next 14 days while your tattoo continues healing. Tattoos can take up to a month to fully heal.

If you have a large tattoo, you may need to replace the Recovery Dermal Shield we gave you. The first piece is on us! More dermal shield pieces are available for purchase here at the shop, cut to the size of your tattoo. If you have a large tattoo and bought an extra piece, you will replace the first one after 24 hours. Remove it under warm running water. Go slow and gentle. It can help to peel it back over itself rather than pulling straight up. Don’t rip it off like a bandaid! Wash and dry your tattoo but DO NOT apply any moisturizer to it afterward.

Reapply your fresh piece of Recovery Dermal Shield to your tattoo, fully covering it all the way around with an extra inch or so. The white paper backing comes off first, apply the piece to your tattoo, and then peel off the plastic layer with the + signs. This piece stays on for the next 3-5 days.

After 3-5 days, remove the dermal shield using the same steps above. This time after it dries, apply a small, PEA SIZED amount of vitamin E oil or coconut oil. Continue washing and moisturizing your tattoo about 2 times a day for the next 14 days until fully healed.

DO NOT: submerge your tattoo during the healing process. Avoid taking baths and stay out of hot tubs, pools, lakes, and ocean water because they can harbor bacteria that can cause infection. Avoid prolonged exposure to water lasting more than 5-10 minutes including showering.

DO NOT: use rubbing alcohol, Neosporin, A&D, or hydrogen peroxide on your tattoo. These first aid products are too harsh and can irritate your tattoo and cause ink to fall out. Also avoid Vaseline.

DO NOT: use scented soaps, exfoliating soaps (the kinds with beads in it), or scented lotions.

    AVOID sleeping on the tattoo.

AVOID wearing tight clothing on the tattoo so it does not stick or get stuck to the fabric and damage your new tattooed skin for the first several days!

Keep your paws off your fresh tattoo, and that goes for pets too!

  • Traditions never go out of style. After 1-3 hours remove the bandage and let the healing begin. Wash your hands with antibacterial soap before every cleaning. With clean hands, gently rub warm water and a mild unscented, antibacterial soap on your tattoo. We recommend Dove. Fully rinse off all blood, ink, plasma, and soap and allow your tattoo to air dry or pat it dry with a paper towel (NO cloth towels). You will wash 2-3 times a day for the first three days of the healing process. We suggest once when you wake, once before bed, and sometime in-between.

On day 4 and all the days to come, you’ll only need to wash it 1-2 times a day following the instructions above. This time, after the tattoo is dry, put a small, PEA SIZED amount of coconut oil or vitamin E oil. Keep washing and moisturizing your tattoo 1-2 times a day for the next 14 days while your tattoo continues healing. Tattoos can take up to a month to fully heal.

  • Use sterile Saline Wound Wash, which can be purchased with us or is found in the first aid section at your local pharmacy or super center’s. Look for .09% sodium chloride as the only ingredient. Using contact saline solution or mixing your own salt solution should NEVER be used on your piercing. Mixing your own salt solutions tend to far to salty and strong leaving your new piercing overly dry and interfere with it healing properly. Do not use Alcohol, Hydrogen peroxide, harsh antibacterial soaps, iodine as these can damage cells. You are going to want to clean the piercing, lymph fluid and/or blood build up and present all kinds of problems in healing. Twice a day (if crystalized body fluid is present clean it off, we do not want to overly clean our piercing because this can delay healing and irritate your piercing. Also causing trauma from friction or excessive motion) clean the entrance and exit points of your piercing daily even after every shower. While healing showers are preferred over bath’s. In bathing in a tub is a must you will need to clean it well before each use and again clean your piercing after you out. Bathtubs can harbor bacteria. Saline Wound Wash is the only product needed for your aftercare unless other wise instructed if infection is present. Follow the instructions listed.

Start by washing your hands before touching your piercing. Spray saline wound wash on the end of a clean Q-Tip or sterile gauze and gently clean the front and back of the piercing and jewelry to remove any crystallized body fluid and blood. While healing it is not necessary to rotate your jewelry. That is out dated care and we find it to prolong healing. Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of soap if soap was instructed by the piercer instead of saline wash. Dry by gently patting with a clean, disposable paper products because towels can harbor bacterial and get snagged on jewelry, causing injury. It’s that easy!

*Tongue and lip piercings require either Saline mouth rinse which we have available for purchase or non alcohol based oral antiseptic or zero alcohol mouth wash.

Don’t play with it and let it heal. If instructed to return for a shorter piece of jewelry keep that appointment. It is very important to size down if instructed to once the initial localized swelling is no longer present. Your piercing will close if you try to do this on your own too soon. It happens within minutes even if you have had it pierced for year’s. Most piercings take at least 6 months to fully heal, so keep cleaning it even if it doesn’t hurt or is no longer sore. Cleaning your piercing should become part of your daily routine

If you got your ears pierced, be careful that it doesn’t get tangled in your hair or whacked by a brush.

  • DO NOT touch or play with the crystal or gold gem. DO NOT eat for 2 hours after the gem is placed. Water is okay to drink. DO NOT brush your teeth for 12 hours after the gem is placed. DO NOT use an electric toothbrush.

It will take approximately 24 hours for the adhesive to reach its maximum strength, so eat only soft foods during this time.

Once the adhesive is properly set, it is important to perform the necessary dental hygiene like brushing and flossing your teeth. Keeping your teeth clean helps prevent plaque buildup around the gem, keeping your smile fresh and cool.
